Service Line Inventory Instructions
As part of the EPA’s newly Revised Lead and Copper Rule, EVERY water utility across the country is required to inventory all of its water service lines both on the public side and on the private side. This means we need to determine the type of water service line that is coming into your house. Four types of water service lines are possible; Copper, Galvanized, PVC (Plastic) and Lead.
The Village of Delanson has determined that the probability of any lead service lines serving its customers is unlikely, however we are still mandated to inventory all service lines.
WE NEED YOUR HELP in complying with this mandate.
How to Determine the Material of Your Water Service Line
You will need a:
● Key or a coin
● Strong refrigerator magnet
Step by Step Instructions
- Find the water pipe that comes through the outside wall of your home and goes to the main water shut off.
- Carefully scratch the pipe (like you would a lottery ticket) with a key or a coin between the shut off and the wall. Do NOT use a knife or other sharp tool. Note: If the pipe is painted, use sandpaper to expose the metal first.
- Place the magnet on the pipe.
- Look at the photos below to determine what type of pipe you have.
